I thought the Death Note movies were pretty great, personally. Besides, when you compare them to all the crappy Hollywood anime/Japanese game adaptions that have/will come out over the years, these are extremely faithful to the original source. Albeit a major alteration took place at the end of each movie, but otherwise, they're pretty solid adaptions. And even with the alterations, who can complain when we're presented at least one scenario in which L technically wins? Sure, they make Light look like that much more of an ass by offing his girlfriend in the first one, but who's to say he wouldn't be capable of doing such a thing in the original manga?
