It follows philosophy from real life how if you try hard enough you can overcome obstacles even if your in inferior position. One of objectives of trainers which strive to become exceptionally strong in world is to develop counter strategies and defense against other pokemon types which might have advantage normally, overcoming their weakness. Thats why E4 members are so hard to defeat, even when going against strongest trainers .
They might use mostly one type but they learned how to overcome type flaws bringing on surface best out of pokemon, with strategy and pokemon strength playing more important factor when going against them.
Even in games, you have chance to defeat pokemon with type advantage if you outsmart opponent by using better strategy, know which attacks and healing potions to use in specific situation and if your pokemon are at enough high level.
Personally im not bothered with pokemon at disadvantage winning battle which wasn't in their favor, as long its done in believable manner with trainer using unique and outstanding strategy to overcome handicap.
It also adds to excitement too, making you sometimes root for pokemon which is in sub position. Seriously who didn't liked battle between Ash Charizard and Gary Blastoise, and innovative strategy which was used there?
As for Ash, using pokemon which are at disadvantage in BW wasn't exactly something he didn't used before really. In original series he used plenty of times pokemon which were at disadvantage, to prove how "advantage isn't everything(Pikachu vs Rhydon, Squirtle vs Macy Electabuzz, Pikachu vs Bellsprout in Kanto league etc comes to mind). In Hoenn this happened quite often too, surprising his opponents like Roxanne, Flannery or Winona when he used Pikachu against rock type, Treecko against fire type, Growyle vs flying type etc.
In league vs Tyson he used Growyle and Glalie vs Quilava and Charizard, amd he was prone to rookie mistakes always(like Chariozard using seismic toss vs ghost type against Brendan in BF)..
In Sinnoh you can notice this happening quite a few times too, like using Pikachu against rock/ ground types like Roark Onix, or grass and ground type vs Candice ice pokemon.
This isn't news to me, because Ash always liked to break myth of type disadvantage=losing.
So im not surprised much by applying same thing in Unova battles, though he tends to use strategy and type advantage quite a few times too. Such as in gym match vs Clay or Brycen.
